Pandelis (Pen) Dallas passed away Thursday, May 11 in his sleep at home. He was 92. He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne (Lemon) Dallas, sister Ruth (Dallas) Hasbrook, daughter Kayla Van Wert, and grandchildren Codie Keeler, Hunter Van Wert, and Andrea Van Wert. If you ever met Pen, you would know he was never short of a story to tell about great life. He was born the son of a Greek immigrant on November 25, 1930. His sisters, brother and he were left fatherless at a young age and he spent his boyhood in and around Toledo during the depression. He went to Burnham High School in Sylvania where he was a standout athlete as a football fullback and kicker, but his real love was the concert choir. After high school, he held different jobs including milk delivery and was eventually drafted for the Korean War. Thinking he was volunteering for the Motor Pool by lining up in the "MP" line, he became a military police officer and his tour included guard duty in the Bikini Islands during the nuclear testing. When Pen was honorably discharged after his service, he moved back to Sylvania, and became a Sylvania Police Officer. He served in many capacities for the department and was very active in the community, retiring as a lieutenant. Always looking forward, while with the department, Pen and his wife Yvonne owned and sold a music store and also bought J & G Pizza, turning it into a regional favorite dining establishment. Pen's passion was his family, especially his grandchildren. He never missed any of the kid's events and beamed with pride whenever their accomplishments were mentioned, tearing up as he got older and softer around the "gruff" edges. Everyone that knew him loved him and anyone who met him immediately was drawn into his quick wit, charm, and charisma. In his life, Pen was loved and respected by community, family, and friends and will be sorely missed.
