Sister Mary Patricia Snyder, S.N.D.

February 9, 1925 — October 1, 2021

SISTER MARY PATRICIA SNYDER, S.N.D.

A rich life lived in a dynamic process of action and attitude, hope and helpfulness describes the 96 years of Sister Mary Patricia Snyder’s life and 76 years of religious profession. Her many ministries of elementary school teacher and supervisor, high school principal and counselor, college dean, and volunteer proved her as one who followed God’s call and the needs of the times, always forward-looking. Sister’s life was a journey of loving as God loves—fully, unconditionally, and passionately—until her death on October 1 at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born on February 9, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio, Ethel Elizabeth was the eighth of nine children of Lucas and Kathryn (Mallory) Snyder. She attended St. James School and Notre Dame Academy. In 1943 she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame receiving the name of Sister Mary Patricia and was professed in 1945. Sister earned a master’s degree in Educational Guidance and Psychology from Boston College, certification in high school administration from Bowling Green University, and certification in elementary supervision from the University of Dayton.

Sister taught in elementary schools of the diocese for 17 years, including Maumee, Sandusky, Norwalk, Delphos, Fremont, and Ladyfield and Gesu in Toledo. She became the principal at St. Joseph School in Maumee in 1961 and a school counselor at Notre Dame Academy in 1966 before becoming a consultant in guidance and education for the Toledo Diocese in 1968. Sister was principal at Notre Dame Academy from 1971-1982. Sister then became an English instructor at St. Joseph High School in Fremont and St. Mary High School in Sandusky before becoming the dean of Notre Dame Extension College. Her spiritual gifts and master’s degree in counseling and psychology led to teaching theology and ministering at Notre Dame Academy and St. James Parish in Toledo. Sister took on communication for the Sisters of Notre Dame and volunteer service at St. Anne Hospital.

Among Sister’s great joys were travel abroad with high school students, leadership of a Bible study group, and avid reading. Whether in joy or sorrow, ordinary or creative, communal or personal, Sister offered herself accountably to God and others.

Sister is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Claude, Harold, Leonard, Charles, and Richard; and her sisters Lorine (Snyder) Schnapp, Mary Snyder, and Margaret Maurer. She will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and her religious community.

Tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 3912 Sunforest Court, Toledo.
