Sister Mary Nadine Mathias, SND
Sister Mary Nadine Mathias, 82, someone who took notice and lived out of the Word of God both in her own life and in assisting others to appreciate deep truth, died on May 14 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio.
Born on September 19, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and baptized Sylvia, she was the oldest of four brothers and one sister. Parents Herman Mathias and Margaret (Regner) Mathias moved the family to Bellevue, Ohio where Sylvia was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1960.
Understanding that research was a way to give glory to God, she had the ability to search and find, and the facts she unearthed led her to know more. No wonder her professional life was a story about being an elementary school teacher in Indiana, Illinois, Florida, and Ohio 21 years; a high school librarian 25 years; and an archivist for the Diocese of Toledo nine years.
When living in parishes, such as St. John, Delphos, Ohio, she often involved herself in parish council, religious education, and office work. She was also on the executive board of the Diocesan Sisters Council. No matter her role, whether director of Notre Dame Academy's resource center or community service, Sister Nadine was determined to do her best, conveying spiritual energy and infinite patience. Students and her religious community felt comfortable in her presence and assured of her help. Significant health concerns dominated the last years of her life, yet she continued visiting family in California.
During the past year Sister moved to Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio to receive the skilled health care she needed. On May 14 Sister died in Hospice of NW Ohio, Ebeid. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, her sister Janet, and twins who died at birth. She is survived by three brothers: Gregory, David, and Richard. She will be truly missed by her loving family and religious community.
Services will be at the Sisters of Notre Dame Center at 5900 Davis Road, Whitehouse, OH, on Wednesday, May 28, with Sharing of Memories at 2:00, eulogy at 4:15, and funeral Mass at 4:30. The link for the funeral can be accessed here.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Urbanski Funeral Home, a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Rd., Toledo, OH. Any tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 1656 Henthorne Drive, Suite 200, Maumee, OH 43537 or online to Sisters of Notre Dame U.S.A. at https://sndusa.org/donatetoledo/
