Nan Hagemeyer, 90, a lifelong resident of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on September 23, 2026. Nan was born on September 2, 1936, to Paul and Lenore Scharschmidt.
In 1959, Nan married Kent Hagemeyer, and together they built a beautiful life centered around family, lasting friendships, shared values, and an enthusiasm for seeing the world. Throughout their years together, they traveled extensively, created countless memories, and built a strong foundation for the family they loved so dearly.
Nan was a graduate of Ottawa Hills High School and continued her education at Ohio University. She devoted herself to raising her family full-time before beginning a career with Toledo Public Schools, where she made a lasting impact in the lives of children for nearly three decades.
In the years that followed, Nan and Kent worked side by side growing Estate Sale by Kent, a business that encompassed their shared appreciation for antiques and collectibles.
Nan found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved long walks along her beloved Crescent Beach, collecting seashells with her grandchildren, an abundance of bunnies, time spent at Devils Lake, a good BLT on the back porch, magazines, photographs from her and Kent's many travels, and games of bridge with dear friends. She also had a competitive spirit that made family games that much more memorable.
Nan had a gift for making both ordinary days and special occasions feel extraordinary. She loved decorating for the holidays, including her memorable Valentine's tree, preparing her signature dishes, attending art shows, hosting gatherings, and spending time with friends. Her home was filled with beautiful treasures and was a place where family knew they were always welcome, whether for a planned celebration or an unexpected visit on the back porch.
She wrote poems for birthdays and special occasions and showed her love through thoughtful gestures and carefully chosen gifts. It wasn't unusual to discover a surprise waiting in the refrigerator, perhaps a jar of her freezer pickles, or a treat hanging from the back door. These little gestures were simply Nan's way of reminding the people in her life that they were loved and thought of.
Nan was always polished. There was an unmistakable elegance in the way she dressed, spoke, entertained, and cared for the people around her. She had a way of making things beautiful without making them feel fussy. Those who loved her will remember her pretty outfits, her perfectly manicured hands, and the familiar sound of her bangles, small details that were so distinctly Nan.
Beneath that elegance was a woman of remarkable strength. Nan was the person others turned to when life became difficult and a crisis needed navigating. She was calm and steadfast, strong yet sensitive, and someone her family could always depend upon.
Above all else, Nan's greatest legacy is the love she gave so freely, fiercely, and unconditionally to those fortunate enough to be part of her life. She leaves behind countless memories and traditions that her family will continue to cherish and carry forward.
Nan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kent Hagemeyer.
She is survived by her children, Brad (Cathy) Hagemeyer, Todd (Teri) Hagemeyer, and Sherri (Donald) Frazier; her grandchildren, Libby, Paul, Allisen, Susan, Cameron, Olivia, Josh, and LaTaya; and her great-grandchildren, Eloise, Claire, Piper, Bennett, Sloane, Thane, Max, and Ari.
In her final days, even one of Nan's lifelong joys brought her comfort. Surrounded by her family, she could look outside and watch the birds and the bunnies she had always loved, a simple and fitting comfort for a woman who found so much happiness in life's small and beautiful things.
Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Nan's life on Saturday, November 7, at Sylvania Country Club.
