Our dad, Melvin Sulewski, age 94, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Married to Kathleen (Barchick) for 72 years, he was devoted with her to their faith and the community at Blessed Sacrament Church, where he helped with outreach, funeral lunches, fish fries, and church cleaning groups.
He was a family-oriented man and was proud of his five children: Dennis, Linda Bourgeois (Tom), Mark (Jill Kossow), Scott (Laurie Bialecki), and Theresa Lagger (Jim); six grandchildren: Clint (Sara), Alex (Paulina), Adam (Bruce), Joy (Tony), Tara (Brian), and Kristi (Ryan); and eight great-grandchildren: Max, Sam, Alex, Rex, June, Lucy, Ethan, and Emerson.
Slinging and delivering ice as a young boy, working at Tiedtke’s department store, Schmidt’s meatpacking house, and several metal plants forged a solid work ethic that enabled him to support his family. He retired from Art Iron at the age of 62.
Whether it was the Bunco group, square dancing (especially on the beach in Hawaii!), hanging out with his neighbors at the beloved family cabin on the Muskegon River, or doing 93 crunches for his birthday workout at the YMCA aqua jog class, he thrived on being part of a group and was always looking to have fun.
Born to Adam and Lottie (Kokocinski) Sulewski in 1931 he never tired of boasting that he was the youngest of 10 ensuring that we never forgot the pride he took in his family and Polish heritage. How many times did we hear the story of how he was born on the kitchen table at dinnertime and chopped ice from the creek to get water in winter? He was the last of his siblings and will be sorely missed.
Thank you to all the doctors and health care providers who helped our dad over the last year, especially Nurse Lindsay and Nurse Hannah from Ohioans Home Healthcare.
