In Loving Memory of Melvin E. Smith
February 1, 1935 – May 13, 2025
With profound sadness and deep respect, we announce the passing of Melvin E. Smith, a beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and the proud patriarch of his family. Melvin, age 90, of Toledo, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Northwest Ohio Hospice.
Born on February 1, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, to Joseph Kerry and Naomi Elizabeth (Carnes) Smith, Melvin was a proud graduate of Woodward High School who went on to live a full and accomplished life. In his younger years, Melvin honed his skills as a cook, working in several upscale restaurants in California—bringing flavor and precision to every dish he touched. He later returned to Toledo where he found a long and stable career with the Penn Central Railroad, from which he eventually retired. Not one to rest on his laurels, Melvin also retired from Toledo Jeep, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
A man of many passions, Melvin found joy in life’s simpler pleasures. He enjoyed challenging puzzles, spirited card games with Ronnie and Iris, and the smooth rhythms of relaxing jazz music. These hobbies, though quiet and humble, reflected his thoughtful mind and reflective spirit.
Though Melvin was known for his stern exterior, those closest to him knew the truth—he possessed the sweetest heart. A man of deep feeling and loyalty, Melvin never forgot anyone who entered his life. He carried people in his heart—holding onto memories and moments with a sense of reverence that was rare and beautiful.
Above all, Melvin was a family man. He absolutely adored his wife of 50 years, Wilma (Quinn), and treasured his granddaughter, whom he lovingly raised from birth. His family was his world. He led with quiet strength, unmatched wisdom, and unconditional love. As the head of the household, Melvin was a source of guidance and support for all. His grandchildren brought him endless pride and joy, and his impact on their lives will be everlasting.
Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved parents, sons Joseph and Kenneth Smith, stepdaughter Michelle Langston, and his sisters Alcine Anderson and Wilma K Smith and brother Edward Lee Malone.
Left to honor his memory and carry on his legacy are his devoted wife Wilma, sons Melvin Smith Jr and Kevin Flemming, siblings Barbara Fuqua and Robert Malone (Pamela), aunt Rowena Ruth Broyles, and life-long friends Joe Allen and Pete Gilbert (Alma). His life and love will also live on in his host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and myriad of nieces and nephews.
