Emily Louise Wilcox Komisarek, age 35, of Toledo, passed away suddenly, leaving behind a world that was made brighter by her vibrant spirit and loving heart. Emily was born on August 31, 1989, in Toledo, Ohio, to Paul Komisarek and Jackie Wilcox.
Emily began her education at Christ the King School and later graduated with pride from Ottawa Hills High School. She continued her studies at the University of Toledo. Throughout her academic journey, Emily distinguished herself both in the classroom and on the field, earning eight varsity letters in volleyball and softball—sports she held close to her heart. Her dedication and character were recognized early on, as she received the Presidential Athletic Achievement Award and was named Citizen of the Month, an honor presented by former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner. Emily’s talents extended well beyond athletics; she was a gifted artist and a creative spirit who found beauty in everyday moments and shared that beauty generously with others.
Emily was also a devoted fan of Notre Dame football. Some of her most cherished memories were the Saturdays spent traveling with her dad to cheer on the gold and blue. Those trips were filled with laughter, excitement, and a bond that grew stronger with every game they shared. Her love for the team, the campus, and the traditions of Notre Dame remained a special part of her life.
Emily spent many years working as a bartender and office manager, where her kindness, warmth, and laughter touched countless lives. She had an incredible ability to make friends wherever she went, and her loyalty and compassion ran deep. Emily didn’t just make friends — she made family. She had a rare gift for making the people in her life feel truly seen, valued, and loved, and she created lasting bonds that will be treasured forever by all who knew her.
Her heart for service was one of her most defining traits. For her birthday one year, Emily chose to give back by organizing donations to the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor — an act of kindness that earned her recognition in The Toledo Blade. She also had a special love for cooking, taking long walks, and spending time with her beloved dog, Izzy.
Emily’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her spirit will continue to inspire acts of love, generosity, and courage in those she leaves behind. Emily was preceded in death by her grandparents Frank and Mary Komisarek, Frank Wilcox, and Steve Loos; her uncle Dave Latta; and her cousin Peter Krauss.
She will be deeply missed by her loving parents, Paul (Carol Knight) Komisarek and Jackie Wilcox, who will forever cherish her memory. Also surviving are her grandmother, Marsha Loos; great-aunts Vickie (Dan) Krauss and Joan (Bob Kefalonitis) Slott; aunt and godmother Sarah Latta; aunts Colleen (Doug) Long and Anna (Tim) King; uncle Frankie Wilcox; godfather Ric (Dianne) Iagulli; cousins Allison Latta, Andrew Latta (Emily Kontur), Tory (Carl) Schaffer, John Krauss, David (Alison) Krieger, Carolyn Slott, and Melissa McGaharan; and many other loving family members and cherished friends.
