Joan A. Ray

Joan A. Ray, 83 of Toledo, Ohio passed away March 4, 2024, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, surrounded by her family. Joan was born July 24, 1940, in Oregon, Ohio to Elmer and Margaret (Shabenas) Pastor. She was a proud teacher in the public school system, dedicated to her students and always putting family first. Growing up in Oregon, OH, Joan was known for her sassy personality, visionary mindset, and never-ending curiosity.

A 1957 graduate of Clay High School, Joan went on to receive a Bachelor of Education degree from Bowling Green State University, and later earned her Master of Education degree. She spent her career teaching science at Northwood Schools and Toledo’s McTigue and McKinley Schools, leaving a lasting impact on all those she taught. Her favorite times were those spent with family and friends at her lake house on Rose Lake in Coldwater, Michigan.

Surviving are her loving children, Jana (Andrew) Smyth, James (Julie) Ray and Jon (Robin) Ray. Grandma “GDawg” will be missed by her beloved grandchildren, Meghan (Rob) McGuire, Madeline (Ben) Standiford, Patrick Smyth, Jimmy, Natalie, Noah, Jacqui and Alyson Ray and great granddaughter Molly Rose McGuire. Also surviving are her brothers Jim and Robert Pastor and sister Janet (James) Alexander. Preceding Joan in death were her parents, her husband James Ray and her longtime companion Steve Rodriguez.

Memorial Services
Joan’s Life Celebration will be Sunday March 10, 2024, from 2 pm until 8 pm at Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo, Ohio. Visitation will continue at 9:30 am Monday March 11 in Gesu Catholic Church where her funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 am with Fr. Marty Lukas officiating. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their loving care. Her family prefers contributions in Joan’s honor be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
