Obituaries - In Loving Memory

Glenn Doris Hartman Denniss
June/7/1931 - July/29/2023

Glenn Doris Hartman Denniss slipped away quietly July 29 at her residence of 11 years after a long battle with dementia.

Glenn was a longtime educator, teaching first and second grades beginning at Old Orchard Elementary and ending at Longfellow, which was then on Jackman Road. She retired in 1990 but went back to the classroom as a long-term substitute. She was a devoted teacher. During a long absence because of illness, Glenn received mail from her students that year saying how much they missed her.

She was born on June 7, 1931, to Imo Kate Hartman and Glenn Hartman in Toledo. She graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1953. After her father died, she took over the responsibility of supporting her mother and three younger siblings, Guy, Carol, and Michael Hartman.

Glenn married the Karl Denniss in August, 1955. They had two sons: Christopher Glenn Denniss, who died on May 21, 2020, and Steven Karl Denniss, who survives. Glenn and Karl divorced in 1977.

As much as she was devoted to her profession and continued to teach while raising her sons, her real passion was her family. Her no-nonsense demeanor belied a caring and generous nature despite what it cost her. Christopher’s daughters called her mom because of their closeness to her and in recognition of her role as matriarch of the family. No one who went to her house for the holidays could forget the large, beautiful meals she prepared from her tiny kitchen. While she didn’t often give warm hugs or “I love yous,” her actions of caring, large and small, showed the depths of her love and concern. Granddaughter Cassandra Denniss Jamet said, “She was an anchor for her family. She will be greatly missed.”

Surviving are son Steven Denniss, sister, Carol (Issam) Ghareeb: grandchildren, Cassandra (Rodolphe) Jamet, Amanda Denniss, Martha (Christopher Merickel) Denniss, Jonathan Denniss, and Danica Denniss, and three great grandchildren Melody, River, and Ripley Merickel.
